Custom exercises
Create exercises that aren't in Metric's built-in library — variations, machine work, or anything specific to your training.
If an exercise isn’t in Metric’s built-in library, create it as a custom exercise.
Creating a custom exercise
- Account → Exercises → Custom → New exercise. Or while building a workout, tap Add exercise → Create new if the search comes up empty.
- Enter the name. Be specific enough that you’ll recognise it (“Pause Bench — 2s” not just “Pause Bench”).
- Pick a category — squat, bench, deadlift, pull, push, accessory, cardio, other. Affects data grouping and default settings.
- Choose trackable or non-trackable. Trackable exercises use the camera; non-trackable exercises always use manual entry.
- Configure defaults — recording resolution, real-time feedback mode, target velocities, tempo. These apply each time you record this exercise.
- Save.
The custom exercise is now selectable when building workouts.
Editing and deleting
From Account → Exercises → Custom, tap any exercise to edit. Changes apply to future sets.
Swipe or long-press → delete. Deleting a custom exercise doesn’t remove historical data — past sets stay tied to the exercise name.
Trackable vs non-trackable
Trackable requires:
- A barbell with circular weight plates.
- Plate sizes Metric can detect (see Recording a set).
- A predictable bar path.
Common non-trackable cases: dumbbell work, kettlebell, machine plates, bodyweight, cardio.
What’s captured
For trackable exercises: bar speed, peak velocity, power, ROM, rep count, bar path, PRs.
For non-trackable: load, reps, RPE, RIR, notes.
Per-exercise customisation
Custom exercises participate in per-exercise preferences — set defaults for which metrics display, video overlay choices, bar path on/off, RPE prompts. See Per-exercise preferences.
Sharing
Custom exercises transfer when you share a template that uses them. See Sharing templates via direct link.
Naming conventions
- Variation explicit: “Pause Squat — 2s”, “Tempo Bench — 4-1-1-0”, “SSB Squat”
- Equipment-specific: “Pin Squat — Pin 4”, “Block Pull — 4 inch”
The name is what shows in your history, charts, and exports.
