Importing a video into Metric Lift
Film a set on any camera, import the video, and Metric Lift tracks it like a live recording. What to film, how to import, and what can go wrong.
Film your set on any camera, then import the file, and Metric Lift tracks the bar the same way it tracks a live recording. The set review shows the same metrics.
During a live recording, Metric Lift also uses the phone’s motion sensors and camera settings. An imported file carries none of that. Record live when you can, and import when you cannot.
Film the video
The rules for a live recording apply. See Recording a set.
- Frame rate. Film at 60 fps. Metric Lift warns you when an imported video runs below 55 fps.
- Phone position. Keep the camera still and side on to the bar.
- Resolution. 1080p and 4K both work. A 4K video takes longer to process.
- Camera. Any camera that records standard H.264 or H.265 video works: a phone, an action camera or a mirrorless camera.
Set the plate size
If the video shows plates that are not 45 cm, set the size before you import. On the setup screen, switch off Default plate size and enter the diameter under Custom diameter (cm). The diameter must be more than 10 cm. See Custom plate sizes.
Import a video
There are three ways to import, depending on where you start.
- Without a workout. On the home screen, tap Import a video. Pick the file, then enter the exercise and the weight.
- Inside a live workout. Swipe left on the set, tap ⋯, then tap Import a video. Metric Lift adds the set to the workout with your live recordings.
- A whole workout from video. Import the first set. When Metric Lift asks what to do next, tap Start a workout and upload more. Then import the rest of the sets into that workout.
When processing finishes, the set review opens.
Find your imported videos
On Pro and Ultra, imported videos go into your video library with your live recordings, and the same share and delete options apply. On Free, Metric Lift keeps its copy for 24 hours. Each video keeps the date it was filmed, so an older video does not appear at the top of the library. See Video library.
When it goes wrong
- Low frame rate. Before you import, Metric Lift shows Low frame rate below 55 fps. If the video runs below 50 fps, the set review also shows Slow frame rate. The data can be less accurate.
- No reps detected. Metric Lift found no reps in the video. Most often the camera filmed from the front, or the plate left the frame. Film the next set side on with the whole bar in frame.
- Wrong numbers. If the plate size was wrong at import, the speeds are wrong too. Import the video again with the right plate size.
- Long processing. 4K video takes longer. If processing takes far too long, the set review shows Long processing. Import a 1080p copy instead.
