Sprint and agility tests
Metric Sprint can time: 5 m, 10 m and 20 m sprints with splits, plus the 5-0-5 and 5-10-5 agility drills. Peak velocity is available on all tests.
Metric Sprint times linear sprints over 5 m, 10 m and 20 m. The longer tests also give you the splits inside the run. Metric Sprint times two agility drills as well: the 5-0-5 and the 5-10-5.
Linear sprints
Every linear sprint uses a standing start at the 0 m line. The longer options add gates in between, so you collect the splits on the way through.
| Test | Gates | Splits you get |
|---|---|---|
| 5 m Sprint | 0, 5 | 0–5 m |
| 10 m Sprint | 0, 10 | 0–10 m |
| 10 m + 5 m split | 0, 5, 10 | 0–5 m, 0–10 m |
| 20 m Sprint | 0, 20 | 0–20 m |
| 20 m + 10 m split | 0, 10, 20 | 0–10 m, 0–20 m |
| 20 m + all splits | 0, 5, 10, 20 | 0–5 m, 0–10 m, 0–20 m |
Run the split versions unless you have a reason not to. A split version costs a small amount of extra setup. It is the same run at the same effort. You get your acceleration and your top end from one rep instead of two.
For what each number means, see Sprint metrics.
How Metric Sprint files splits
Metric Sprint files a split by distance, not by test. A standalone 5 m sprint gives a 0–5 m split. The first 5 m of a 20 m run gives the same 0–5 m split. Metric Sprint files both on the same axis. They share a personal best and sit on the same trend line.
So you can change the test you run from week to week without splitting your history in two. Run 20 m with all splits today and a 5 m tomorrow. Your 0–5 m trend keeps building either way.
Agility tests work differently. The 5-0-5 and the 5-10-5 each get their own axis. Neither one mixes with your linear splits.
5-0-5
Gates sit at 0 m and 5 m.
- Start at the 0 m line.
- Run out to the 5 m line.
- Plant and turn on the 5 m line.
- Run back through the start.
Metric Sprint times each 5 m leg and reports the 10 m total.
Note: Metric Sprint times the 5-0-5 from a standing start at the 0 m line, not a flying start. Your total does not line up with published norms that use a rolling approach into the turn. Compare against your own history and against your roster.
5-10-5 Pro Agility
Gates sit 5 m either side of a middle start.
- Straddle the 0 m line.
- Run 5 m to one side.
- Turn, then run 10 m across to the far gate.
- Turn, then run 5 m back through the middle.
The test covers 20 m in total, with two turns.
The second turn and the longer middle leg make this a test of repeated change of direction. It tends to expose side-to-side differences that a single-turn test can hide.
For how Metric Sprint judges a turn on an agility test, see Agility turns.
Switch between tests
Metric Sprint remembers the last test you ran and the gate position. It opens on that test next time, so you can repeat a test in the same session.
