Repeat jumps & hops

Hop side-on to the phone and Metric Jump detects the 10/5 or 5/3 test by itself, then scores RSI, contact time and hop height.

UPDATED

Stand side-on and close to the phone, then hop on the spot. Metric Jump counts each hop live. When you stop, it scores the test as a 10/5 or a 5/3 from your hop count. Then it shows your reactive strength index (RSI). One recording can hold double-leg, left and right tests.

Film side-on

Repeat jump mode films you from the side, from the waist down. Free jump mode films you from the front. If you face the phone in Repeat jump mode, Turn side-on shows.

  1. Tap the mode name at the top of the capture screen and choose Repeat jump.
  2. Stand the phone upright at foot to shin height. A tripod is best. A phone on the floor also works.
  3. Stand side-on and close to the phone. Your waist to your feet must fill the frame on every hop.
  4. Stand still until the calibration ring completes, about 1.5 seconds.

Tap Need some help? on the capture screen for a framing diagram.

Test on the same floor and in the same shoes every time. Grass, dusty timber, rubber and concrete each change your contact times, and so does footwear. If you test in more than one place, compare results from the same surface only.

Run a test

  1. Wait for Hop when ready.
  2. Jump in from standing. This first jump is the lead-in. It never scores, because no floor contact comes before it.
  3. Keep hopping on the same spot. Stay stiff at the ankles and get off the floor as fast as you can.
  4. Stop and stand still. A pause of about 1 second ends the test.

Your RSI shows for 2 seconds. To run the next test, start to hop again. For a single-leg test, hop on one leg. Metric Jump detects the leg by itself, from the height of each foot.

Tap Finish when you are done. Metric Jump saves every test in the recording, including the one in progress.

10/5 and 5/3

You do not pick the protocol. Metric Jump counts the hops after the lead-in and scores each test on its own.

Hops after the lead-inProtocolWhat scores
10 or more10/5The best 5 of the first 10 hops
5 to 95/3The best 3 of the first 5 hops
Fewer than 5NoneThe test saves with no RSI and no PB

“Best” means the highest RSI. Hops after the 10th, or after the 5th in a 5/3, stay in the hop strip but never score. A hop needs at least 100 ms on the floor to score.

The 10/5 averages more hops, so one bad contact moves the score less. The 5/3 takes half the hops. Use it when you test double-leg, left and right in one session and fatigue starts to cost you. Pick one protocol per athlete and keep to it. A 10/5 RSI and a 5/3 RSI are not the same test.

What you get

After each scored test, your RSI fills the screen with one of three badges:

  • New PB! — the best RSI you have recorded for that test type.
  • Pogo · 87% of PB — this test as a share of your best for that test type.
  • Pogo · auto-detected — your first test of that type. A left-leg test reads Pogo · L · auto-detected.

In your summary and history, Metric Jump names each test Repeat jump, Repeat jump · left or Repeat jump · right. Each test gets its own card, headed with the type, the test number and the protocol, for example Repeat jump · test 1 · 10/5:

  • RSI — the mean RSI of your scored hops.
  • Contact — the mean contact time of your scored hops, in milliseconds.
  • Hop height — the mean height of your scored hops.
  • Hops scored — how many hops made the score.

A strip under the tiles shows one bar per hop, sized by its RSI. The hop table lists every hop with its contact time, flight time and height, and the first row is the Lead-in. In playback, each hop carries a label with its height.

The Tests table at the bottom lines up every test in the recording by type, RSI, protocol and hop count. When a recording holds a left test and a right test, the summary adds L / R balance. See Jump analytics. For how each number is worked out, see Jump metrics.

Fix a test

Both controls sit on the test’s row in the Tests table.

  • Wrong leg — tap the coloured type capsule, then Leg. Choose Repeat jump, Repeat jump · left or Repeat jump · right.
  • Bad test — tap the minus button. Metric Jump takes the test out of your charts, PBs and L / R balance. Tap the plus button to restore it.

When it goes wrong

  • No RSI scored. You did fewer than 5 hops after the lead-in. Metric Jump saves the test with its hop count but gives no score. Hop 5 times for a 5/3, or 10 times for a 10/5.
  • One test splits into two. A pause of about 1 second between a landing and the next hop ends the test. The hops after it start a new test. If neither part reaches 5 hops, neither part scores.
  • A hop does not count. Under 60 ms in the air, Metric Jump reads a heel bounce. Over 800 ms, it reads a full jump. It also skips a hop where it cannot see your feet clearly. A hop that lands more than 40 cm from your start spot does not count either.
  • A hop counts but does not score. Its contact was shorter than 100 ms.
  • The leg label is wrong. Change it from Leg in the Tests table.

Compare

Compare each athlete against their own history. Metric Jump keeps a separate RSI PB for double-leg, left and right tests. It ranks repeat jumps on RSI only, never on hop height.
