Importing Training Videos for Velocity Analysis in the Metric App

Process training videos from your camera roll by importing them into Metric for analysis.

UPDATED

Metric can also analyse video you didn’t record inside the app. Shoot a set on your device’s regular camera app and import the file for Metric to run it through the barbell tracking and processing pipeline.

Tip: Imported video data isn’t as accurate as in-app recording. During a live recording, Metric uses image quality, exposure controls, focal length, and accelerometer data to refine tracking — none of which are available in imported video. Use import in a pinch; for regular training, and best results record live in-app.

Tips for your imported video

The same recording rules apply for imported videos: keep the phone upright and stable, vertical (portrait) framing is best, and 60fps is critical for accurate velocity readings on imported videos. Resolution matters less — 1080p or 4K both work fine.

Slow-motion footage (120fps, 240fps) is not recommended — the variable frame rate breaks Metric’s timing calculations.

Imports work from iPhone, iPad, Android phones, action cameras (GoPro, DJI Osmo, Insta360), and DSLR / mirrorless cameras. Anything that produces standard H.264 or H.265 video with 50fps or 60fps.

How to import

Three paths, depending on where you’re starting from:

  • Single set, no workout active — from the home screen, tap Import set. Pick the file, set weight and exercise, Metric processes it.
  • Fully imported workout — import one set first, then activate the imported workout to add more imported sets under the same workout.
  • Inside a live workout — on the recording screen, swipe right on the camera button to reveal the import option. The imported set is added to the current workout alongside live recordings.

Once processed, the set summary appears with all the standard metrics just like for regular live recordings.

Plate sizing for imports

If the imported video used non-standard plates, set the custom plate size on the setup screen before importing.

See Custom plate sizes.

Imported footage and the video library

Imported videos go into your Video Library alongside live recordings, tagged with their set data. Same export, share, and delete options apply.

Note that imported videos will carry with them the timestamp of their actual recording so may not go to the top of your video library list.

See Video management for the library overview.
